The Longevity Cell Bank has launched an initiative in Oman that will provide free umbilical cord blood storage for 100 newborns each year over a five-year period. The programme, valued at nearly RO1.5 million, is intended for families registered under the Social Protection System, with priority for cases involving identified medical needs. In total, 500 newborns are expected to benefit.

The clinical-grade centre collects, tests, processes and freezes cord blood, stem cells and other biological samples for possible future medical use. The facility was established under entrepreneur Yasser al Barami, developed with Biothrive Group and supported by Oman’s Ministry of Health. Its services introduce a local option for cellular preservation while supporting further work in regenerative and cellular medicine.

Cord blood contains blood-forming stem cells that can develop into several cell types. Such cells have been used in the treatment of inherited blood conditions, including sickle cell disease and thalassaemia, as well as some cancers and immune disorders. Dermatologist Dr Fakhriya al Shibli said placenta-derived stem cells are also being studied for tissue repair, autoimmune conditions and organ damage linked to chronic illness, although many possible applications remain under research.

The initiative has also prompted discussion about medical ethics and public understanding. Dr Shaikh Kahlan bin Nabhan al Kharousi, Assistant Grand Mufti of Oman, said stem-cell treatment is permissible in Islam when the biological material comes from a lawful source. He added that cells from consenting adult donors are acceptable, while embryos intentionally aborted to obtain cells are not.

He also advised families to confirm that treatment centres meet proper ethical and legal requirements. By combining free access for eligible families with clinical storage and clear ethical guidance, the programme seeks to widen responsible access to a field that may support future treatments.
