Cairo Retains Place Among the World’s Top 100 Innovation Clusters

Cairo has retained a place among the world's leading innovation centres, ranking 86th in the cluster assessment of the 2026 Global Innovation Index. The Egyptian capital remained the only African cluster in the top 100, according to the report issued by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). The ranking evaluates activity such as scientific publications, international patents and venture capital. It assesses the wider city's innovation activity rather than a single university.

Cairo University president Dr Mohamed Sami Abdel-Sadek said the result reflected the strength of Egypt's research institutions. He noted the contribution of universities, research centres and technology organisations. Data from the previous edition placed Cairo University ahead of other scientific institutions within the Cairo cluster. Abdel-Sadek said the university was working to strengthen the link between research and practical applications.

The university's priorities include high-impact research, patents, entrepreneurship and startup development. It is also expanding industry partnerships and supporting the transfer of research into commercial use. Artificial intelligence and other modern technologies are being incorporated into teaching and scientific work. Abdel-Sadek said the next stage would focus on converting research findings into products, applications and solutions relevant to industry and society.

Egypt also improved its overall Global Innovation Index position by three places to 83rd, after ranking 86th in 2023, 2024 and 2025. Its reported strengths included 40th place for research talent, 44th for the H-index of citable publications, 48th for university quality and 54th for researcher numbers. The country ranked 27th for economic diversification and 22nd for net foreign direct investment inflows. These measures accompanied Cairo's continued presence in the global top 100 cluster list.
