Bangladesh recorded their first Test victory on Australian soil after defeating the hosts by nine wickets in the series opener at Marrara Oval in Darwin. The visitors completed the result inside four days despite intense heat and the pressure of facing the world’s top-ranked Test team. Chasing only 57 on the final day, Bangladesh reached 57 for one in 14.2 overs.
Mominul Haque sealed the win by cutting Beau Webster to the boundary and finished unbeaten on 30, while Shadman Islam made 25 not out. Opener Tanzid Hasan was dismissed for a duck, but his first-innings century had already helped Bangladesh post 426 in reply to Australia’s 198. Hasan Mahmud led the early bowling effort with six wickets in Australia’s first innings and completed the match with nine.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz also produced a strong all-round display. He scored 65 in Bangladesh’s first innings, removed Steve Smith for 44 on day three, and took four more wickets as Australia were bowled out for 284 in their second innings. Cameron Green resisted with 104, his third Test century and first at home, but his dismissal left Australia unable to set a demanding target.
Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto described the result as “the biggest win so far for Bangladesh in any format.” Australian captain Pat Cummins said his side had been outplayed in all areas and pointed to the home team’s first-day batting failure as a major factor. The victory was especially notable because Bangladesh had been dismissed for 54 in a practice match in Darwin little more than a week earlier and had lost to Zimbabwe in June.
