Uzbekistan won one silver and three bronze medals as Tashkent hosted the International Olympiad in Informatics for the first time. The 38th competition ran from August 9 to 16 and brought together 375 contestants from 92 member delegations. Students competed individually, solving algorithmic programming problems over two five-hour contest days.

Jahonali Khaydaraliev, a ninth-grade student at the Muhammad al-Khwarizmi Specialized School in Tashkent, earned Uzbekistan’s silver medal. Timur Kadirbergenov of the Presidential School in Nukus won bronze, while Ulugbek Rakhmatullaev and Jahongirshoh Avazkhonov of the Presidential School in Namangan also received bronze medals. It was the first time that all four members of Uzbekistan’s main team had won medals at the same Olympiad, and Sardor Salimov from a second host team received an honourable mention.

The result improved on the country’s previous best performance, achieved in Sucre, Bolivia, in 2025 with one silver and one bronze. Uzbekistan had been selected to host the 2026 contest in 2023 and received the official Olympiad flag at last year’s closing ceremony. Digital Technologies Minister Sherzod Shermatov called the Tashkent event “more than a milestone” and “a homecoming,” referring to the country’s connection with the ninth-century mathematician Muhammad al-Khwarizmi.

Members of the national squad had trained since November 2025 and attended preparation camps in Romania and Kazakhstan. The success also reflected Uzbekistan’s recent expansion of specialist technology education through Presidential Schools, dedicated IT schools and national digital-skills programmes. Kazakhstan also performed strongly with one gold and three silver medals, while Germany is scheduled to host the next Olympiad in 2027.
