A Vision for Gaza’s Future: Malaysian Waqf City Project Unveiled | By Sayd Haque
On July 7, 2024, the Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organizations (MAPIM Malaysia) held a heartfelt Hi-Tea session at the Mardhiyyah Hotel in Shah Alam. Titled "Recharge: Gaza Rises!" and graced by the esteemed Ustaz Dr. Abdul Somad, the event served as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle in Gaza, highlighted by the stirring hashtag #gazabangkit. This gathering also unveiled the ambitious Malaysian Waqf City project, a beacon of hope and development for the beleaguered region.
The event drew notable figures including the Honourable Dato' Seri Amirudin Bin Shari, the Chief Minister of Selangor, whose pivotal support has been instrumental in advancing the Malaysian Waqf City project. The forum boasted a distinguished panel comprising Tan Sri Dato' Sri Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir, Executive Chairman of Dagang NeXchange; Dr. Ridzwan Bakar, CEO of the Malaysian Waqf Foundation; and Dr. Sani Araby Al Kahery, CEO of MAPIM Malaysia.
The panelists shared poignant recollections of their journeys into Gaza, particularly the inauguration of a twin mosque funded by public donations and MAPIM's collaborative efforts. They underscored the profound impact of MAPIM's initiatives in Gaza, while calling for broader support. The Selangor State Government received accolades for its unwavering commitment to the Malaysian Waqf City project.
Dr. Sani Araby Al Kahery presented the vision for the Malaysian Waqf City, emphasizing its role as a cornerstone for Gaza's long-term reconstruction. "The Malaysian Waqf City project is not a short-term solution but is planned to be the foundation for Gaza's reconstruction. This development plan not only provides the much-needed material support for the people of Gaza but also encompasses a more holistic approach, including considerations for education, economy, and spirituality," he stated.
This monumental project, with an estimated cost exceeding 100 million ringgit, envisions 14 apartment buildings representing Malaysia's 14 states, alongside a mosque, school, business complex, water tower, central kitchen, hospital, and renewable energy infrastructure. Support has already been garnered from various states, government bodies, and generous benefactors.
The highlight of the event was the address by Ustaz Dr. Abdul Somad, whose impassioned words resonated deeply with the audience. Reflecting on the history of the Israelites, he urged a renewed commitment to Maal Hijrah and solidarity with the people of Gaza and Palestine.
The "Recharge: Gaza Rises!" Hi-Tea session was more than an event; it was a call to action, a reaffirmation of solidarity, and a blueprint for hope and resilience in Gaza's future.
